In the modern adaptation, it is Hugo and Johanna, two very different characters. The shy Hugo is a janitor in a prefabricated building. He feels at home here, is appreciated by the residents and sings his songs in the corridors. But gentrification doesn't stop at the "Plattenbau", and the dramatic changes in the building make Hugo uncomfortable.
Even more precarious is Johanna's situation, who lives in a bus in front of the building and is confronted with racism and sexism on a daily basis. The two grow closer - they share a sense of not belonging and, above all, a love for music. But the world is visibly coming apart at the seams for Hugo: a catastrophe is brewing that is both life-threatening and existential for Hugo and Johanna.
